Image Bank

I chose this collection of six photos to focus on my theme of cigarettes and smoking, which relates to evidence due to the lasting effects of smoking on your body. The evidence of change can relate to the health aspects but also in some of these photographs, lipstick is left all over the butts of the cigarettes, this is another form of evidence showing that you leave your mark everywhere.

These six pictures depict the idea that we leave marks wherever we go, the fact that lipstick can be used to write on mirrors and leave messages but also simple things such as lipstick prints on coffee cups or wine glasses can be the sign of break ups, make ups, business meetings, date nights or engagements. These link to the theme of makeup I hope to focus on in this project.

These six photos in this collection show crushed and ruined makeup, I love the idea of ruined makeup because it shows that it has been used previously or that someone has done something to alter the way it looks, the perfect manufactured nature of its previous life within a box. On makeup brushes, palettes and lids the evidence of use and evidence of people is left on them.

These six photographs in this collection show the transformation makeup can make to a face, makeup can transform both the personalities and identities of a person for example a lot of women in the modern society say that their makeup gives them confidence and makes them feel free-er and able to liver better. This is evidence of how makeup leads to transformations.

I have chosen these six photographs to finish my image bank as this is an area I would like to explore in relation to my whole makeup-evidence theme. This makeup style is known as Avant Garde makeup, which is over extravagant makeup that is often used in high end fashion publications. I believe this is evidence of imagination and strong personality but also freedom to look however we like. Makeup like this could be construed as even evidence of civilization and society

Irving Penn is best known for his fashion photography however he also created modernist still life works of metal and found objects. For a large part of his career he focused on objects which obsessed him such as scraps of glass, bone, metal and a few times human skull. At the end of the seventies and early eighties he made thirty two negatives, then printed them in platinum palladium throughout the following years. Irving Penn relates to evidence as he uses materials which come from other things therefore they are evidence of the previous being. The photo above is evidence of natural beauty, which I hope to focus on in this project.

Ana Oliveira is a photographer who did a story where she compared aging faces across a sixty year period, she asked her subjects to pose in positions that matched the way they posed in old portraits of themselves, she also asked that they use the exact set ups and outfits that were similar to the original photographer. The final photographers which are examples of evidence showed the progression of life and aging, despite the fact that the portraits are the exact same people these photographs are an amazing example of how the tests of time can change a persons physical appearance.

Cara relates to evidence as she shows a transformation, evidence of change and leaving behind your previous self. In recent years she did a project where she shot subjects under UV lighting to show off sun damage, these photographs are my favourite pieces of Cara's work as I think they show evidence perfectly. The illuminating photo series shows off the hidden imperfections strewn across peoples faces due to sun exposure.

The photo above is known as Candy Cigarette - from her honest and controversial series Immediate Family - captures one of her three children, Jessie (now a model and artist), in a defiant and self-aware pose, staring down the lens at her mother, holding a bubblegum cigarette. Her series What Remains is a fascinating collection which shows the epitome of the definition of evidence, a delicately haunting collection which shows off the horror of death and decay.

11. Bruno Metra & Lawrence Jeanson

http://www.metra-jeanson.com

Bruno Metra and Lawrence Jeanson have created a study called "ID" in which the concept is to juxtapose "normal" faces with features of supermodels and celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and the Duchess of Cambridge. The duo have previously said the works are intended to show how much people are influenced by the media.  Within the media, we are bombarded by photographs of others, Metra and Jeanson asked their models to look through magazines and cut out features of specific others. These cut outs were then applied to the faces of the models creating a change, relating to my hopeful eventual theme which is evidence of change.

12. Leland Bobbe

http://lelandbobbe.com

Leland Bobbe is a native New Yorker and has been a professional photographer for over 30 years. Bobbe's photographs delve beneath the visible suface of the world we see and provide a glimpse of a hidden dimension that lies beneath. Similar to a poker player that blinks, each image has a "tell"...a crack in the facade that allows us to delve more deeply into the psychology of inner workings of his subjects. I chose a photo from the collection above due to the fact it exhibits a transformation and relates to my theme of makeup and evidence of change.

13. Victor Demarchalier

http://victordemarchelier.net

Victor Demarchalier was born and raised in New York City. Due to his roots being around the fashion industry, he had an appreciation very early on for photography and fashion. Victor Demarchalier has done a lot of work for multiple Vogue publications and links to my previously mentioned theme of evidence of change. I chose the above photograph as I love black and white photos as I think they show tone and depth.

14. Mark Story

http://www.markstoryphotography.com

Mark Story created this study 'Living In Three Centuries: The Face of Age' which focuses on centenarians (people 100 years and older.) There are currently 250,000 of them living in the world, in very rare circumstances people can live to 110 years and beyond, inspiring a new demographic label: supercentenarian. Story has the aim to photograph people who have lived in three different centuries which shows the evidence of life, the age is shown on their face and this is again, evidence of aging.
15. Joseph Szabo

http://www.josephszabophotos.com

Joseph Szabo is a teacher, photographer and author who studied photography at the Pratt Institute. Szabo finds inspiration in his every day life as a teacher and has been photographing his teen-age students for the past twenty five years. His book on adolescence Almost Grown features coming of age photographs of all kinds. All Szabo's photos have an air of spontaneity as if the moment has been perceived, seen and then caught.  I'd like to focus on Joseph Szabo in order to emphasize the evidence of aging and how adolescence effects people in different ways.

16. Alice Hawkins

http://www.alicehawkins.com

Alice is a photographer and film maker who is based in London. Tadao Cern created this collection named "Blow Job" in which he used severe wind force in order to disfigure the faces of his subjects. I love this collection by Tadao Cern specifically due to the evidence of change that is exhibited, each subject goes through a transformation.

18. Tom Kershaw

http://photo.tomkershaw.net

Tom Kershaw's collection Black Lips intrigued me due to the continuity of the shoot, this shoots links to the theme I hope to focus on throughout this project which is makeup, I like the way the project is labelled Black Lips  and the theme is continuous the whole way through despite the fact that everything else aside from the black lipstick changes in the various photographs.

19. Alexander Khokhlov

http://www.alexanderkhokhlov.com

Alexander Khokhlov usually works alongside Veronica Ershova in a photographers duo world renowned for its creative projects. I love this collection above where Alexander Khokhlov used black paint to paint iconic symbols across his subjects face, I like the meaning behind these shots because they show all the materialistic things that people value in the modern world on a black block white painted face.
